How sensory toys help calm children with ADHD

Supporting and managing a child with ADHD requires structure and planning. Keeping things simple and not over complicating; keeping calm and consistent. One of the best ways is to create daily schedules of what is happening and when, so that there is no confusion and cause for undue distress.

As a child with ADHD gets older, more independent and accountable for their behaviour it is a must to try and eliminate potential distractions that may cause disruption to routine. So, from a pre-school age and early years’ school age where symptoms of ADHD become more obvious, and children are exposed to more and more stimulation and stresses, sensory toys can become invaluable to provide focus and a sense of calm.

So how do sensory toys help calm children with ADHD?

Sensory toys provide necessary stimulation without causing a distraction from the task at hand. Simply put, they can be played with whilst completing tasks or during periods of physical inactivity when stress levels are high. Children with ADHD may need something sensory that calms the whole body, such as a weighted blanket or part of their body, such as a weighted toy, or even something more aligned to specific areas of the body, be it manual or lower body sensations, such as fidget toys and sensory mats (for bare feet).

So how do our sensory toys help calm a child with ADHD?

Our sensory toys are weighted, the buckwheat husks filling has a scrunchy texture and they can be used at different times of the day to help transitions. For instance, Hairy Hugger is great for younger children who still actively play with cuddly toys but adds more versatility through its weight and hugging arms. They therefore provide a companion that can be taken on journeys and trips as well as to sit next to a child whilst they get dressed or carry out creative tasks.

For slightly older children Sensory Worm and Sensory Snake provide a more physical solution. They can deal with stronger children who need a release of energy and can be used right through to and during the night to provide full body sensory relief.

Sensory Snake in particular is there to be jumped on, pulled, wrestled and then cuddled. The perfect solution to a hyperactive child needing to find calm in an overstimulating moment.

The number one benefit of a sensory toy is to provide a distraction from what may be causing frustration, distress or anxiety and the best way is through touch.

The sensory toy having calmed the incident can then stimulate other moods such as happiness, playfulness or tiredness.

Picture the scene…Tonight, I’m going to have an early dinner, put my feet up with a hot chocolate and relax in front of the latest series Netflix has to offer. Great. Except…. that is never going happen is it.

For many parents and carers, the evening is the opposite of relaxing and best laid plans are destined to fail. It isn’t through anyone’s fault. Just circumstances.
